Last week, we held our Athletics Carnival (Minor and Major Days) where House Spirit and pride were shining through as our students participated in the track and field events. Congratulations to all Houses for your sporting conduct and teamwork. Thank you to Chris Newton for his precision in planning and commitment to providing a sporting event that allowed our students to share their gifts and talents with our College community.

Semester 1 Reports
Semester 1 Academic Reports will be available for viewing/printing through Parent Lounge and Parent Orbit in the afternoon on Friday, 27 June (last day of Term 2).
These reports will outline the progress students have made in their learning for Semester 1. Our Teaching Staff welcome the opportunity to meet with our Parent/Carers to discuss the progress of your Student(s) at the upcoming Parent-Teacher-Student Interviews to be conducted in Term 3, Week 2 on Tuesday, 22 July. All interviews will be held in the Father Bucas Centre. Information regarding how to book an interview will be emailed to Parents/Carers once reports are released. Please remember that these interview times represent another opportunity for contact, and it is always possible to arrange a further time to meet with the Teacher outside of this event. I thank our Teachers in advance for their willingness to be available for these interviews.

Year 7 in 2026
Last week, we completed our second round of interviews for Year 7 in 2026 with prospective students and their Parents/Carers. I thank the teachers from our Senior Leadership Team and members of our Office Staff for making themselves available for the interviews. I would especially like to thank Tahnee Smith (Enrolments Officer) for her precision in the planning of these two afternoons.
A very special thank you to our Year 7 Student Ambassadors who welcomed our Year 6 students and their families to Holy Spirit College. Archie, Eric, Sophie and Tahlia were outstanding ambassadors for Holy Spirit College. I thank them for being friendly and welcoming.
As Semester 1, 2025, draws to a close today, I wish each of you a restful and rejuvenating Winter break. It has been a semester filled with growth, learning and memorable experiences for our College community. As we bid farewell to Semester 1, I would like to acknowledge the dedication of our students to their studies and extracurricular activities. I commend our students for their hard work and achievements from within and outside of the classroom.
Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending St Brendan’s 10-year celebration and Blessing and Opening of stages 4 and 5. It was my honour to take past school captains who are now in our Senior school to this event. Rory, Imogen, Patrick, Matilda and Dallas. These servant leaders continued to support the St Brendan’s community by helping to serve light refreshments. We all enjoyed watching a video of each student during their primary years.
Staffing News
I would like to welcome Louise Milne to Holy Spirit College, who will be joining our Spirit Café staff and Lauren Sonneveld, who joined our team of Teacher Assistants this Term.
Congratulations to Carla Hunt on her success with the advertised position of Pastoral Care Officer. Although we will all miss Carla’s smiling face at our Front Reception, we are delighted to see her follow her passion and put her recent study into practice. I would like to thank Carla for ten years’ service as the first face of our College. Best wishes, Carla, with your move to the Welfare Team.
Welcome back from maternity leave, Jessica Evetts! It is great to have you back with us. Jessica is working part-time in our Inclusive Curriculum Centre as a Case Manager for the remainder of this year.
On Friday, we will be farewelling Angela Fordyce (Mathematics Department) and Nathan Thompson (Physical Education Department). We thank them both for their commitment to the teaching of our students and wish them well for the future.
Thank You!
On behalf of the Leadership Team, I extend my gratitude to our dedicated staff. Your passion for education has made this semester a success. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our students’ growth and development.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
We thank you for the many blessings we have received throughout Semester 1.
We give thanks for the opportunities provided, and we praise you for the gift of our College.
We ask you to continue to bless our students, their families, and our staff.
Give them peace and opportunities to relax and rejuvenate during these Winter school holidays.
Amen
I pray you have a safe and enjoyable Winter break.
Blessings,
Alison Wales - Principal
Reflection
This term has been bursting with moments that bring our theme, Pilgrims of Hope, to life. A standout for me has been witnessing our whole community rally behind the Backpacks for the Homeless project. What a beautiful reminder that when we come together in faith and action, we can truly make a difference for those who are most in need.
Our Year 10 Retreat and Year 11 Leadership Camp provided students with precious time to step away from daily demands, pause, and reflect on their journey, who they are and the people they are called to become. It’s these moments of stillness and connection that strengthen our community and our faith.
Another highlight was our Feast Day Mass in Week 7. Gathering as a whole College to celebrate our identity and mission fills our hearts with gratitude and reminds us that being part of Holy Spirit College is about belonging, sharing, and walking together as a family in faith.

As we head into the well-earned break, may this be a time to slow down, reconnect with loved ones, and enjoy simple moments that refresh our bodies and minds. Let’s also remember in our prayers all the students and staff representing HSC at the QISSRL Carnival in Rockhampton and the QISSN Carnival in Bundaberg in the first week of the holidays. May they play with spirit, sportsmanship and kindness, carrying our College values wherever they go.
I wish every student, staff member and family a safe, happy and restful holiday.
Let us pray:
Spirit of love, show us how to care deeply and act courageously.
Spirit of truth, help us live with integrity.
Spirit of wisdom, guide our decisions each day.
Spirit of gentleness, teach us to treat others with kindness and compassion.
Holy Spirit, dwell in our hearts and make us instruments of peace and unity.
Help us to recognise the gifts you’ve placed within each of us, and give us the courage to use them to build a better world.
Amen.
God Bless,
Lesley Fraser - Assistant Principal (Mission)

Empowering Students Through the Berry Street Education Model: Ready to Learn Plans Launching in Term 3
As part of our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing and academic success, Holy Spirit College is excited to announce the implementation of Ready to Learn Plans for all students in Week 1 of Term 3. This initiative is a key component of the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM), a trauma-aware and evidence-based approach to teaching and learning.
During Pastoral Care classes, students will be guided through the process of creating their own individual Ready to Learn Plan. This plan is designed to help students better understand their emotional needs, identify strategies to regulate their emotions, and develop a personalised toolkit for staying calm, focused, and productive in the classroom.
The Ready to Learn Plan supports what BSEM calls Present Centred Learning—a state in which students are emotionally regulated and mentally available for learning. By equipping students with the skills to manage stress and distractions, we are laying the foundation for improved engagement, resilience, and academic achievement.
This initiative not only fosters self-awareness and emotional intelligence but also strengthens the partnership between students, teachers, and families in supporting each learner’s journey.
Each student will complete their own Ready to Learn Plan, which can be found on pages 26–27 of the student diary. We encourage you to talk with your child about their Ready to Learn Plan and how it can support their goals both in and out of the classroom.
Together, we can create a learning environment where every student feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive.
Pastoral Care Team News
Hi, my name is Carla Hunt.
Most of you may recognise me from working at the Front Reception in the College's Administration Office.
My formal academic qualifications are in counselling, and I am currently a full-time student at CQU studying my Bachelor of Psychological Science.
What you may not know about me is that I am now the Pastoral Care Officer at Holy Spirit College. I recently started my new and exciting position at the College, and I look forward to working with the students not just in their academic journey, but their emotional and social wellbeing as well. I work closely with the Year Level Deans, College Counsellors, and Teachers. My role is about listening, encouraging, and walking beside young people as they navigate school and life. I am friendly and approachable, and my goal is to help students organise their daily routines and build a strong foundation to which they can rely on when facing challenges and striving for long-term success.
Every day brings something new: a quiet chat with someone who is having trouble organising their timetable, encouragement when assessments are due, helping a student reconnect with school after a rough patch, or simply being a steady, trusted presence on campus is what I am here to do.

YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety Presentation
On Monday, 16 June, all Year 11 students attended the ‘YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety’ presentation by Melissa McGuinness.
In 2012, YOU CHOOSE founders, Melissa and Peter McGuinness's 18-year-old son, Jordan, made driving choices that caused the loss of four innocent young lives. Jordan also died in the crash. Since 2017, the program has been facilitated for approximately 250,000 teens.
YOU CHOOSE – Youth Road Safety is highly acclaimed and the winner of the Australian Road Safety Award for school programs.
YOU CHOOSE’s messages are challenging, though extremely important for young people and their decision-making as drivers and passengers. Many students were moved to profound personal introspection about their own families and connections to their intentions, their choices and their actions. This is a key intent behind the mission's motto - Own the Choice Own the Outcome.
Melissa challenged the students to consider how they will personally seek leadership in road safety, live life to its fullest, protect their loved ones, and be truly accountable in situations where they need to place their safety and wellbeing at the forefront of decision making. To exchange expectations, commitments and permissions to speak up and to act in moments-that-matter.
We were extremely fortunate and grateful for the time Melissa spent sharing her own personal experience with our Year 11 students.

Elevate Education 2025
On Wednesday, 25 June, our Year 7 students participated in a session with Elevate Education lasting one lesson. Elevate have been coming into our College for many years now, and working with our students on how to improve their organisation when at secondary school. After having their Semester 1 assessments, now was a great time to begin to prepare our students for Semester 2, with Elevate working on time management during the session. The focus was on how students can feel less pressure and stress at certain times if they can forward plan and allocate time for each of their tasks (both inside and outside of school). The feedback from the Elevate presenters was very positive; they spoke highly of our students and their attitudes. Hopefully, this information can help our Year 7 cohort move forward through the College.
The Year 10 students also participated in a high-impact workshop presented by Elevate Education early this week. This program is specifically aimed at this age group and is designed to address and provide skills for students to improve their studentship and time management. This is of utmost importance to students as they head into their introduction to senior subjects next semester. All students attended two very worthwhile sessions over the two days.
Session 1: Study Sensei (Monday, 23 June 2025)
In this session, students addressed the question: “What is study?” This breaks down the study techniques of the top students, providing students with a road map for what work they need to be doing across the rest of the year, and how to do it. Skills covered include working consistently and note-taking. Students learnt how to get organised and effective notes done during the term, instead of just before exams. They also covered conceptual learning skills and how to stand out on assessment, distinguishing oneself from other students.
Session 2: Time Management (Tuesday, 24 June 2025)
In this session, students addressed the question: “Once I know what to do, how do I find the time to do it?” Students have busy lives and for most, the challenge is simply finding time to get the work done. Skills covered in this seminar include how to develop a study routine that ensures productivity and how to work smart to achieve the most marks. Students were also shown how to develop effective study groups with their peers and were introduced to the most common reasons underlying procrastination, and how to manage (or even eliminate) them.

The Resilience Project - Year 9
In Year 9 Resilience Project lessons this term, we have been focusing on the key areas of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). Mrs Borg’s class have worked through activities including:
- grounding ourselves when we are feeling overwhelmed
- identifying our emotions and how they can affect the way we see the world
- evaluating how we are influenced by peers and social media
- changing the narrative, guided by the story of Ned Brockmann
In our final lesson this term, we created acrostic poems using the key GEM words with activities to help us ‘change the narrative’ of our thoughts and feelings. These will be displayed in our classroom for the rest of the year.

Full STEAM Ahead!
The Year 10 Science classes have been busily working on STEAM projects over the past 3 weeks of this term. Students have chosen a project from one of the Senior Science strands to research, build a model and poster to present to their classmates.
Some of the projects included:
- Making a diorama of an aquatic ecosystem
- Building an environmentally sustainable house
- Making a model of the brain and looking at the effects of concussion
- Building a bridge to withstand the most weight
- Dissecting owl pellets to identify its prey
This project marks the end of Core Science as students choose their electives for Senior next semester. It has been wonderful to see all students actively engaged in their STEAM projects. Well done, Year 10s. There have been some impressive designs!

HSC Students in the Mackay Monarchs Netball Teams
We are incredibly proud of our talented students who represented Mackay Monarchs in the recent Mackay Netball Carnival with outstanding performances!
Four of our students, Talia K, Isla O, Cassidy B and Tanni K, played in the Under 14 Blue Mackay Monarchs, who bravely stepped up to compete in the Under 16A division—and finished an impressive second place against older and more experienced teams.
Meanwhile, another Under 14 Blue Mackay Monarchs team, included students Zara K, Peyton S and Piper C and coached by HSC's Mrs Tina Kirkwood, also played up in the Under 16B division and emerged as champions!
Both teams have now earned the honour of representing Mackay at Netball Queensland's Junior State Age on the Sunshine Coast this July.
Congratulations to our students and staff—your hard work, courage, and sportsmanship continue to make us proud!
Park safe and keep our kids safe
There were a number of close calls with vehicles and pedestrians near our schools and sporting zones last year.
With students now back at school and sports season under way, it is time to park safe and keep our kids safe.
Parking in the wrong spot can prevent safe access along pathways and obscure the vision of other drivers and pedestrians.
Council will be patrolling school and sporting zones to ensure no one is parking in an unsafe manner.

Special Topic: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities and is a great opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
