It is hard to believe that by the end of this week we will be halfway through Term 2! There is, however, still so much to look forward to this term. Some of our significant whole College upcoming events include:
- 6 June: Feast Day
- 17 and 18 June: Athletics Carnival (Minor & Major)
Thank you to our Parents/Carers, Staff and Students for completing the “Tell Them From Me" Survey. Your feedback from these surveys will help guide our College to plan for the future.
Year 10 TOPS & Pathways
Last Thursday, our Year 10 students participated in our innovative Tapping Our Potential (TOPS) day. Throughout this day, students attended specific career sessions and listened to invited guest speakers talk about a variety of career options. During the evening, Year 10 students, along with their parents, attended our Pathways Through Senior @ HSC and Careers Expo. This was an opportunity for our parents and students to engage with Senior Subject Teachers and universities, as well as a variety of experts in their field. We are grateful for the industry partnerships that Holy Spirit College has established over the years.

Tomorrow, our Year 10 students and their parents/carers will attend a compulsory SET Plan mentoring interview. Our College has implemented the Year 10 Mentoring Day to support our students as they transition to Senior schooling. A special thanks to our 31 Mentoring Teachers who will provide support and guidance to our Year 10 students. This day would not be possible without their dedication and commitment to ensuring success for our Year 10 students as they transition to Senior.
These two days were possible thanks to the commitment and dedication of our staff and industry partnerships. Without their support, these days would not be as meaningful for our Year 10 students and parents.
A special thank you to Anne Miles - Assistant Principal (Curriculum), Matthew Baisden - Dean of Students (Year 10), Simone Eiser - Learning Pathways & Careers Program Leader, Ailene O’Brien - VET Coordinator, Samantha Flavell - Administration Officer (Curriculum), Louise Sheedy - Administration Officer (Events), Alex Molnar - Maintenance Manager and the Maintenance Team.
Year 11 Leadership Camp
Last week, our Year 11 cohort attended their Leadership Camp at Kinchant Dam Outdoor Education Centre. This camp experience provided our students with an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and work together as a cohort. I am sure our Year 11 students and future leaders of our College enjoyed the opportunities and experiences that this outdoor leadership camp provided.

Thank you to the following staff who assisted and supported our Year 11 students:
Camp 1
Ashley Watson, Sandy McLellan, Jessica Davison, Kellie Devine, Lisa-Maree Doyle, Ken Fuller, Sam Harris, Marnie Lamb, Danielle MacGregor and Stuart Presley.
Camp 2
Ashley Watson, Adam Vanderlinde, Ian Ballantyne, Meagan Casey, Meredith Farquhar, Chris Kidd, Sandy Kidd, Andrea Morrow, Nathan Thompson and Christine Vanderlinden.
A big thank you to Ashley Watson - Dean of Students (Year 11) for coordinating the camp for our Year 11 students.
National Volunteer Week
During National Volunteer Week, you are encouraged to thank a volunteer. We have many students and staff members who selflessly volunteer their time to help and support others. At Holy Spirit College we have plenty of opportunities to volunteer. Students may like to join our Environment Group, IMPACT Group (Christian Ministry), Z Club, Music Ministry, or support our sporting program by coaching or umpiring. I encourage our students, if they are yet to experience volunteering, to seek out opportunities to help others.
Just a few hours of volunteer work can improve your mood and outlook. Regular volunteering is associated with improved mental health. Personally, I believe that if it makes you happy, then you should do more of it.
Some benefits from volunteering may include:
- developing stronger social networks and friendships
- becoming more active, mentally and physically
- less stress and anxiety
- developing new skills and knowledge
- improving your future employability
- an enhanced Resume
- added purpose and meaning to your life
Prayer
Loving Father, You taught us the importance of service through the many examples set by your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the works of the Holy Spirit and the grace poured out by you, we thank the wonderful people who have volunteered their time at Holy Spirit College to enrich the lives of our Students and Staff. May you always care for our College volunteers and continue to bless them with their many gifts and talents. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
Blessings,
Alison Wales - Principal
Reflection
I’ve always admired mosaic-tiled coffee tables – the way countless small pieces form something beautiful and whole. Eventually, I decided to make one myself. After watching some YouTube tutorials (which made it look far easier than it was), I started. But cutting tiles and fitting them into a meaningful design was more complex than I imagined. I spent so much time focusing on the individual pieces that I lost sight of the overall picture.
In many ways, that mosaic table became a reflection of life itself.
Our lives are like mosaics, a collection of moments, challenges, achievements, and relationships that form a unique and beautiful picture together. But in the busyness of everyday life, with assessments, friendships, responsibilities, and worries, it’s easy to become fixated on one small part and forget the bigger story God is helping us create.
When I feel overwhelmed or stuck in the messiness of daily life, I often return to a small stone on my desk. Engraved on it are the words from Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” These words remind me that in the stillness, God is present. When I pause, breathe, and let God in, I begin to see that He is gently shaping the bigger picture of my life, the mosaic only He can see in full.
Eventually, I finished that coffee table. But what I really gained was a deeper understanding of how important it is to care for the small things, while also stepping back and allowing God’s love to bring unity and meaning to it all.
At Holy Spirit College, our motto, "Peace and Unity", encourages us to be attentive to the various elements and purposes that shape our lives. As Pilgrims of Hope in 2025, we are invited to pause, be still, and recognise God’s loving presence, which quietly forms the mosaic of our lives, one piece at a time.
In this spirit of hope and unity, the Catholic Church joyfully welcomes a new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. Originally from the United States and having served faithfully in Peru, Pope Leo brings a deep pastoral heart, a commitment to dialogue, and a vision for a more connected and compassionate world. In his first public address, he expressed gratitude to Pope Francis and called upon everyone to build bridges of understanding and peace. As he begins this sacred mission, let us keep Pope Leo XIV in our prayers, trusting that the Holy Spirit will guide him—and us—on this shared journey of faith.
Let us pray:
Loving God, we give thanks for the election of Pope Leo XIV, the new shepherd of Your Church. May the Holy Spirit guide him with wisdom, courage, and compassion as he leads us forward in faith. Strengthen him to be a voice for peace and unity, and a beacon of hope for all.
As Pope Leo XIV begins this sacred mission, guide us as well, Lord, to walk with trust and openness. Help us listen deeply to Your loving presence in our lives. Nurture our hearts so that, like the Pope, we may see not just the individual pieces, but the greater mosaic You are gently crafting within us.
Amen.
God Bless,
Lesley Fraser - Assistant Principal (Mission)

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
As part of the Rotary Club's End Domestic and Family Violence Campaign, The Betterment Project visited the College on Tuesday, 13 May 2025 to talk to our Year 12 boys.
Mason Black and Daniel Mason spoke to the boys about how to build respectful relationships with themselves and with women. The Betterment Project aims to prevent domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide by fostering good habits in young men before bad habits manifest.
If you want to find out more about the project, I suggest checking out this youtube clip of Mason Black challenging his peers to be proactive in stopping abuse and to keep their mates accountable. The speech was praised for inspiring positive change but also received criticism for potential hypocrisy within the school community.
Brisbane Boys' College Captain Mason Black's resounding address to his peers
Thank you to the Mackay Region Rotary Clubs for sponsoring this opportunity.
It's in our control to end coercive control.
In Queensland, the month of May is dedicated to Domestic and Family Violence Prevention. This annual initiative aims to:
- Raise awareness of domestic and family violence and coercive control
- Highlight the support services available
- Send a clear message that violence in our communities will not be tolerated
The theme for 2025 is take positive action today to build a safer Queensland. A safer Queensland can start with you. Whether you’re part of a member of a community sports club, a small business owner, a school board member or just a Queenslander who cares, there are simple things we can all do today to take action against domestic and family violence in our communities.
What are domestic and family violence and coercive control?
Domestic and family violence is not about conflict – it’s about power and control. In a healthy relationship, there is an equal balance of power between partners, and both partners feel free to state their opinions and make their own decisions. Love not Control. Domestic and family violence is not always physical violence, it can take many forms including coercive control.
Coercive control is a pattern of behaviours (which can be both physical and non-physical) perpetrated against a person to create a climate of fear, isolation, intimidation and humiliation. It might make you feel unsafe, scared, threatened, or like you are walking on eggshells. Over time, this behaviour can have a devastating impact on your autonomy, independence, personal wellbeing and safety. (http://www.qld.gov.au/lovenotcontrol)
All forms of abuse are serious and never acceptable.
Adolescent Violence in the Home
Adolescent violence to parents/carers is a serious issue. Anecdotal evidence suggests it is increasing. Adolescent violence can be perpetrated against mothers, fathers, siblings and carers by daughters and sons. There are many reasons why it occurs. These include children witnessing or experiencing family violence and repeating their fathers’ abusive and violent behaviours toward their mothers, parenting styles, adolescents’ reactions to traumatic events or conflict, adolescent mental health or drug and alcohol issues and other contributing factors. Sometimes there is no apparent reason why it happens. This booklet provides a resource for parents/carers who experience violence from their adolescents. It helps parents/carers identify violent behaviours, suggests strategies for dealing with adolescents and provides a contact list of services and agencies that can help parents/carers deal with the traumatic situation they find themselves and their families experiencing. We hope it will help to increase the safety and well-being of parents and carers and provide strategies to support them in parenting their adolescents in ways that promote caring, responsibility and non-violence. Year 11 and 12 Students and Parents
QCAA have developed two animated videos that give students and parents a quick guide on how the QCAA endorses internal assessments and confirms students’ results.
The videos are available on the QCAA website via the links below:
Endorsement – quality assuring school-devised assessments
Confirmation – quality assuring school-marked assessments
Reminder – AARA Policy – Senior Students
A reminder, Year 11 and 12 students who are unable to sit an exam or submit an assignment must have an approved AARA under QCAA guidelines. These guidelines and application have been communicated by email, Year 11 Information Session, through Year Level Deans and also the Information book given to all students.
Please note, students are not eligible for an AARA on the grounds of:
- Unfamiliarity with the English language
- Matters the student could have avoided (eg misreading exam timetable, misreading instructions, not backing up files on a computer)
- Matters of the student’s or parents/carer’s own choosing (eg family holidays)
- Matters that the school could have avoided
If there are any questions or concerns, please contact the school for clarification.
Year 12 Confirmation – First Internal Assessment
QCAA advised this week of the publishing of the first Internal Assessment confirmed results for our Year 12 students. As these results are confirmed, they will appear in the Students Learning Account. Communication to Year 12 parents and Year 12 students in LEP explained the importance of monitoring these accounts.
Student samples were submitted in Term 1 and have undergone the QCAA state wide process of reviewing and confirming marks for every general subject (ATAR eligible subject).
Further Confirmation events will be held later in the year to confirm the results of the second and third Internal Assessment. Students will know all their results before they sit their External Exams.
Students will have learnt from their strengths and weaknesses in their first assessment and are working with their experienced teachers to improve their future work.
Confirmed results will also appear in Parent Lounge and Student Café after the 30 May.

From the Office
To ensure a student’s safety and welfare, it is important the College be kept informed of your student’s whereabouts. Parents/Carers are asked to contact the College Office on the morning of a student’s absence from school. The College follows up, with a text message to a parent's/carer's designated mobile phone.
There are numerous ways to notify the College of an absence:
- Using the Parent Orbit app, navigate to 'Absences' where you may add an absence entry.
- Log in to Parent Lounge via the College website and navigate to ‘Attendance’ where you may add an attendance entry.
- Telephone the designated Student Absentee phone line 4994 8699 and leave a voicemail message.
- Email the attendance message to 320_Absentee@rok.catholic.edu.au.
Regardless of which method you use to notify us of your child’s absence, please ensure the following information is included in your message:
- your name,
- the child’s name and year level, and
- the reason for the absence.
Notifications of absence should only be provided by the child’s parent/carer (as listed on the enrolment contract). Notifications received from a student will only be processed after verification from their parent/carer has been received.
Late to School (Late Passes)
The Holy Spirit College school day commences at 8:30 am and concludes at 3:00 pm. Students are expected to arrive by the due time. If they arrive late to school, however, they must report to Student Reception to obtain a late pass slip from the Attendance Self Registration Desk or a late pass stamp in their Student Diary, then proceed immediately to class and show this slip/stamp to the teacher.
Early Departures
If, for any valid reason, a student needs to leave the College grounds during school hours, parents/carers should write a note (preferably in the Student Diary) stating the time and reason for the early departure. The note must be signed by a parent/carer. The student is to show the note to their teacher who will release them from class. The student must then report to the College Office (Student Reception desk) to sign out before leaving the College grounds. Should the student return later that day, he/she should sign back in at the College Office before proceeding to class. Please note that interruption of student learning time is discouraged and, therefore, requests to contact students during class, without prior notification, will only be carried out in situations that the College considers are of an unavoidable or urgent nature.
Our College Attendance Officers are Mrs Karen Byron and Mrs Sandra Thomason. Should you have any questions regarding your child’s attendance, Karen and Sandra welcome your call.

2025 Year 11 ACTS Camp - "A Chance to Serve"
Year 11 students are invited to take part in the 2025 ACTS Camp, a unique opportunity to come together with peers from across the diocese to reflect on life, faith, and personal growth.
This year’s camp, titled “A Chance to Serve,” encourages students to consider how they can contribute to building a more compassionate, just, and peaceful world. Through exploring their own gifts and recognising the needs in their communities, students will be challenged and inspired to make a meaningful difference in their families, friendships, and school.
Dave Jorna from Project Hatch will lead the experience, guiding students through engaging sessions and activities that foster self-discovery, leadership, and connection.
The camp will be held at the Capricorn Coast PCYC Leadership Camp, Cooee Bay, from 23-25 July.
Students can visit Student Services to collect an application form. Applications are due Wednesday, 4 June.

Year 11 Leadership Camp
Year 11 students recently took part in their Leadership Camp at Kinchant Outdoor Education Centre. Camp provides students the opportunity to develop and display their teamwork and leadership skills as they prepare to be leaders of the College in 2026.
The cohort was split into 2 groups with Kambara and Yara students taking part in Camp 1, and Arinya and Bilyana students taking part in Camp 2.
Students participated in a range of activities during the day including High Ropes, The Giant Swing, Team Challenge Exercises, Abseiling, Canoeing and Orienteering. The evenings of camp involved a very competitive trivia competition on the first night, and a liturgy service and campfire on the second.
Students enjoyed the outdoors and beautiful sunshine for the entire duration of the camp, and their participation, behaviour and engagement were fantastic.
I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and students involved for creating a fantastic memorable Year 11 Leadership Camp.

One of the initiatives of our P&F Association is to provide SchoolTV for our HSC Community.
The purpose of SchoolTV is to provide a single resource for parents, students and staff covering a range of Wellness & Wellbeing topics, on a monthly basis. Content is based around the very real issues faced by parents and today’s youth and is presented in a multi-media format.
SchoolTV is available at all times on the HSC Website.
New Topic: Gender Diversity
In today's world, many young people are exploring who they are - not just in terms of career aspirations or friendships, but also how they understand themselves, including their gender identity. For some, this journey is straightforward. For others, it can involve questioning, rethinking, or expressing gender in ways that may not align with traditional expectations.
As a parent or caregiver, it's completely natural to feel uncertain or even overwhelmed at times. You might have questions, concerns, or simply want to better understand how to respond in a way that's helpful and affirming. The important thing to know is that gender diversity is not new - but our awareness and understanding of it is growing. It means recognising that not everyone experiences gender in the same way. While many young people feel comfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth, others may experience or express their gender in ways that feel different to what's traditionally expected.
Supporting a gender-diverse child doesn't require you to be an expert - it requires you to be present, open-minded, and willing to listen. Research shows that young people who feel accepted and supported by their families have significantly better mental health outcomes, regardless of where they are in their gender journey.
COMMUNITY
Student Special Achievements
Students at HSC are encouraged to excel in their chosen areas of interest, whether these are school-based interests or occur outside the school arena. If you would like to share an achievement relating to your student with the College community, please submit the details to media@hsc.qld.edu.au. (Be aware that we don’t always know about your student’s achievements unless you tell us!)
(Note: Students who excel at ‘school-based’ sports, cultural and academic pursuits through the school pathway are formally recognised at our Sports Awards Evening or Cultural Awards Showcase and/or Speech Night (Academic Awards) each year.)
Park safe and keep our kids safe
There were a number of close calls with vehicles and pedestrians near our schools and sporting zones last year.
With students now back at school and sports season under way, it is time to park safe and keep our kids safe.
Parking in the wrong spot can prevent safe access along pathways and obscure the vision of other drivers and pedestrians.
Council will be patrolling school and sporting zones to ensure no one is parking in an unsafe manner.
